1 Crazy and Wonderful Year With my Dog
A little over a year ago, my husband and I adopted a 7-year-old dog. We had discussed getting a dog but we didn’t set out that day thinking “we should adopt a dog”. It just so happened that the local animal shelter had a sign out saying they are waving adoption fees for dogs over 25 pounds. Seeing this sign, we decided to go look at the dogs. We looked at all the dogs, and one in particular stuck out to my husband. We were able to take Ash outside and play with him, and we both fell in love. He was friendly and playful, and even though he was a little shy, we thought he was adorable.
When we took our pup home we bonded instantly, and he has taken on the role of my protector. He is an Australian Cattle Shepard Mix, and his herding skills are insane. He will come and let me know if I’ve been working at my desk for too long, he tells me when it’s time for us to go to bed or for a walk, and if he thinks something isn’t safe. He is very attached to my husband as well, but he doesn’t feel the need to herd him around the house…
It was an interesting experience getting to know Ash, and forming a routine with him. All we knew about him when we took him home was that he was found abandoned on a farm and was at the shelter for 3 months. We quickly realized that he was fully trained and had been abused. I couldn’t believe that someone would abuse him (although it’s hard for me to comprehend abuse of any kind to animals or people) from day 1 he was so happy and well behaved. (Don’t get me wrong, he’s misbehaved but nothing out of the ordinary.
He is definitely part of our family now and goes just about everywhere with us. He sits with me in my studio while I work, he comes along on family vacations, and goes on doggie play dates with his friends (dogs of family members and friends). I’m so glad we found Ash, I can’t imagine him not being in our lives now.
